GoMA Youth Group

The GoMA Youth Group (GYG) is an initiative of young adults aged 16–26, created with the purpose of affecting change in GoMA by influencing our exhibition and public programmes. Each year we welcome up to 15 Glasgow-based young people, who meet weekly at the museum over the course of the year, approximately from October to July.

GYG members are actively involved in running the group in every aspect. Under guidance of the GoMA learning and curatorial teams, members can select what duties or aspects of the organisation interest them and support that part of the work. The content of each meeting is based on the young people’s choices. In the first part of the programme, they get to know each other and various museum professions. During facilitated discussions and polls, they share what artists or professionals they would like to meet, and the team makes the necessary arrangements for this to happen. They are also asked what activities they are interested in, for skill enhancement and social events. This leads to the group realising their own programme in GoMA. They decide what this will look like and how to make it happen, working on each step until completion, with support and guidance from staff. Finally, they also take part in the evaluation of their own programme.

Each member gets travel expenses to attend the sessions as well as refreshments during the meetings. In case of special events or meetings happening over dinner or lunch, we provide meals as well, catering to their dietary needs.

Throughout the year, they have access to various opportunities, which they select, to meet artists and various other professionals from whom they can learn about their professional pathways, about their current practice, and ask questions. They then get to organise their own events and workshops at GoMA, leading up to the use of our community exhibition area, COMMONSpace, over the summer.

We will soon be recruiting participants to the new cohort (from October 2024). In the meantime, take a look at our brand new Intercultural Youth Group or follow GYG on social media for more updates:
