Inner City featured works by LA based artist Michael C McMillen, Barbadian-Scottish artist Alberta Whittle and Scottish illustrator Mitch Miller. Through multimedia installations, sculptures and drawings- and text-based illustrations, the exhibition explored questions about the modern city, hidden communities and cultural identity. As its centrepiece, a detailed and atmospheric miniature depiction of a Los Angelos slum (By Michael C McMillen) from Glasgow Museums’ collection was displayed for the first time in 15 years. Mitch Miller’s community engaged artworks explored local hidden communities in Glasgow, and Alberta Whittle’s practice questioned postcolonial power as articulated through memory and history.
The exhibition was accompanied by a programme of related artist films which responded to the themes in the exhibition involving Mitch, Whittle and students from the MSc in Film Curation at Glasgow University and the Mlitt in Curatorial Practice at GSA and Glasgow University.

Michael C McMillen: Michael C McMillen (b. 1946) is a sculptor, installation artist, and short filmmaker form Los Angeles, California
Alberta Whittle:Alberta Whittle is a Barbadian artist, researcher and educator. Her practice is informed by diasporic conversation and working collectively towards radical love – she moves between the UK, Barbados and South Africa.
Mitch Miller:Mitch Miller is an illustrator, writer and socially engaged practitioner. He ‘invented’ the illustrative style of the Dialectogram in 2009 and has since worked with residents, employees, users and visitors to a number of difference spaces in Glasgow.
