Glasgow Museums’ Intercultural Youth Group
Glasgow Life Museums invites you to join the newly created Intercultural Youth Group programme, to be a voice for young people aged 18-26 from ethnic minority groups in Glasgow.
This programme will experiment with different ways in which museums and galleries can provide a space for underserved communities in Glasgow, creating opportunities for development, socialising, and engagement with our vast collection.
We will meet every second Friday, 3-5pm, in the Studio on the top floor of GoMA (fully accessible) and in other Glasgow Museums venues. Bus tickets (e-codes) for travel will be available.
To find out more, you can book a slot at our information event, at 3pm on the 20th September 2024 at GoMA, Royal Exchange Square G1 3AH, where you’ll be able to meet us and chat with us about the group.
Please apply here if you are a young person aged 18 – 26, belonging to an ethnic minority group and are interested in community, heritage, art, and culture. Deadline for application is Monday 30th September.
Why an intercultural Youth Group Now?
Between 2019 and 2023 Glasgow Museums was involved in the Our Shared Cultural Heritage (OSCH) project, focused on celebrating south Asian heritage and decolonising heritage spaces. We worked directly with young South Asians on a variety of projects across different museums in Glasgow, including GoMA. The success of these projects and especially the feedback from the participants involved helped us to recognise the need for young people from ethnic minority groups to have their own safe space in galleries and museums.
Now, in partnership with the Mental Health Foundation, the Intercultural Youth Group programme aims to be the third space in GoMA for Glasgow’s young people from ethnic minority groups.
Throughout your year in the programme, we will support you to lead on projects and activities inspired by museum collections and focused on the things you care about, as well as providing opportunities for your development. Join the Intercultural Youth Group if you want to explore our collection, your heritage, Glasgow, and the arts.
So please apply, and don’t worry if at the moment you can’t, as we’re working on some exciting projects that you could be involved in the future, so keep your eye out on our social media!
