Niki de Saint Phalle: The Eric and Jean Cass Gift

Niki de Saint Phalle: The Eric and Jean Cass Gift
Date: 15 November 2012 – 16 November 2013
Space: Gallery 4

This exhibition presents works by Niki de Saint-Phalle, as a gift from private collectors of Eric and Jean Cass through the Contemporary Art Society.

In 1993, the artist gifted the Glasgow Museums with two works, The Great Devil and Altar to A Dead Cat, following a retrospective at McLellan Galleries. They are displayed alongside 14 works (13 sculptures, one lithograph, and relate ephemera) donated by Eric and Jean Cass. The works show the crossing of art and design, the links between object and performance.

Niki de Saint Phalle was also commissioned by Julian Spalding, the Director of Glasgow Museums (1989 – 1999), to create an entrance to the new Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow and also a work for the tympanum of the building. These works were highlighted as part of this exhibition.
