GYG presents: Sharing COMMONSpace

A glimpse of the exhibition

Title: Sharing COMMONSpace
Date: 9th September – 1st October 2023
Space: COMMONSpace – Gallery 2

This exhibition is a result of the Gallery of Modern Art youth engagement programme called the GoMA Youth Group (GYG). This show is the result of the GYG’s summer programme, ‘Making COMMONSpace’. The GYG organised and facilitated a series of workshops and events on topics and issues emerged from a public consultation. They wanted this to be a space to relax, hang out, and appreciate each other’s creativity.

The GoMA Youth Group (GYG) is a collective of young people aged 16-25 working with the Gallery of Modern Art to design and deliver a youth centred programme of events with the intention to use art to connect with other young people in Glasgow.

The latest cohort, GYG 2022/23, is formed of 14 young people and started in December 2022. The co-produced programme always begins with a heritage training that aims to introduce young people to the sector. The second phase is the research and development of ideas, the third phase is the preparation of events and marketing, the fourth phase is the launch and delivery of their programme of engagement, and at last, they final project. The young people have access to a public space at GoMA, the COMMONSpace, that they can use however they want. This year, they decided to exhibit the projects done by the participants of their summer programme of workshops.

The summer programme consisted of 8 workshops based on topics shared by the participants of their youth consultation back in May where they got to discuss the issues that young people in Glasgow want to explore creatively in their upcoming programme of workshops. The aim was to diversify the creative narratives at GoMA, discussing the issues which we care about and the ways they could be creatively explored as a community and what medium they could use to do so. Topics that emerged from this consultation were climate change, racism, migration, social inequality, sexuality and gender. The workshops used different creative mediums such as mosaic, dance, screen printing, stencil making to explore these issues. the results can be seen in the amazing exhibition ‘GYG presents: Sharing COMMONSpace’ curated by the GYG.
