DOMESTIC BLISS
DOMESTIC BLISS
Dates: From 8 March 2019
Venue: Gallery 4
Domestic Bliss presents works from Glasgow Museums’ collection reflecting on this building’s history as a former house, Royal Exchange and civic space. Observing how artists work with fine art, design and craft practices alongside social and political changes, this show explores domestic labour and feminism, public and private space, intimate relationships and historical narratives. We live in a consumerist world where home interior, lifestyle magazines and social media present flawless examples for us to emulate in our own lives. What happens if we question what is seen as ‘domestic bliss’, and whose stories are hidden or revealed?
‘I want to make something that lives with the eye as a beautiful piece of art, but on closer inspection, a polemic or an ideology will come out of it’. Grayson Perry

I visited GOMA in June and Domestic Bliss moved me like no other exhibit I have ever taken in. It has changed my way of thinking in many ways. Is there any chance you would be willing to have Domestic Bliss go “on the road”. It is so important. I would be willing to help lobby the AGO in Toronto. Many thanks
Suzanne Christie
Thank you Suzanne and apologies for the delay in responding we are a small curatorial team and not always on here. Thank you for your wonderful feedback on Domestic Bliss and I am glad it has such a profound effect. It is responding to numerous conversations with artists over the years, but also changes in thinking about collections, museums and the spaces they inhabit. It is also a chance to explore how works from the collection can be a catalyst for conversation and social change. However, there are no plans to tour this exhibition as it is an evolving semi-permanent display of works from across Glasgow Museums’ collection and in the current climate is planned to remain in Gallery 4 for the foreseeable future. Thank you again for the feedback. KB, curator Domestic Bliss
