Sara Barker is interested in what she terms ‘biographical space’, a theme she explores through modernist literature. Her sculptures are light and spare in appearance and on closer inspection they reveal themselves to be full of incident, movement and intricate detail.
Her frameworks bring complex brazed and welded elements together with painted pictorial surfaces that have the lightness of collage. They are characterised by line rather than mass or heaviness – so much so that they have often been described as being drawings or paintings in space.
For this GENERATION exhibition the experience of moving through Gallery 2 is altered, with works occupying bespoke walls and plinths for the viewer to navigate. Glass is used to create further thresholds in the work that reflect and complicate form. Black backdrops remove shadows, creating a sense of infinite space.

Sara Barker (born 1980 in Manchester) studied BA Painting at The Glasgow School of Art.
